Real Central NJ Soccer today announced the signing of Syracuse defender Gavin Wigg for the 2022 USL League Two season, pending league and federation approval. Before transferring to Syracuse this spring, Wigg played for Western Michigan, appearing in every match for the Broncos and notched himself an assist as well. This summer will be his first season in USL League Two.
“I’m excited to come to New Jersey and play for RCNJ,” said Wigg. “Every step up in my career so far has worked out for me, and I’m excited to test myself again.”
Wigg grew up in Dublin, Ohio just outside of Columbus. At the youth level, he played for Club Ohio and Ohio Premier. Wigg also played high school soccer for Dublin Scioto and was named to two First Team All-Ohio Capital Conference selections and two Third Team All-District selections while in high school. In 2019, the Irish finished 16-2-1 and captured the OCC Cardinal Division title.
“Gavin is a big time player and a leader on the field,” said head coach Brian Woods. “He’s really good at winning aerial duels and playing passes out of the back.”
USL League Two is a pre-professional soccer league that allows elite college talent to play at a highly competitive level in the NCAA off-season. League Two is known for giving players a stepping stone to the professional game.
“My goal is to play after college and to go as far as I can,” said the 19-year-old sophomore.
Wigg and RCNJ will open the 2022 USL League Two season at Philadelphia Lone Star on May 14th. The men will host the Ocean City Nor’Easters on May 21st for its home opener at Mercer County Community College.
