Real Central loses final home game of 2026 USL 2 season

WEST WINDSOR, NJ – Real Central NJ lost their final USL2 home game of the season 2-0 to West Chester United SC on Wednesday night. The visitors made good use of a nearly hour-long man advantage to seal the victory and leave town with all three points.
The game started quietly with each team probing the other during the first 20 minutes. Real Central NJ defender Malachi Neal made an early impression by stopping through balls to West Chester United SC attackers. Neal’s efforts throughout the game were rewarded by being named Player of the Match.
Both teams clogged the middle of the pitch in the early going. That forced both teams to attack from the wings where the only space was available.
The most important moment of the game happened in the 32nd minute when Real Central NJ’s Max Schrader was issued his second yellow card of the match. The second yellow, which equaled a red, meant the home side had to play the rest of the game a man down.
West Chester United SC made good on that advantage in the 38th minute when Andrew Li scored to make it 1-0. The play started when William Kelly intercepted a pass in midfield. Kelly charged ahead, used his body to ward off defenders, and lobbed a gorgeous pass to Li in the box. Li’s volley finish was as smooth as a glass of champagne on a summer evening. There was nothing goalkeeper Tyler Sloan could do but watch the ball sail over his head and into the net.
The visitors kept the pressure up immediately following the goal. But Real Central NJ’s defense held firm and the score was still 1-0 going into the halftime break.
The second half began with Real Central NJ on the front foot despite being a man down. The home club created two very good chances in the 49th and 51st minutes for Andrew Kitch. However, both were saved by goalkeeper Francisco Benbow.
A quick and brutal twist of fate spelled doom for Real Central NJ in the 73rd and 74th minute. First, a header from a Real Central NJ corner kick that seemed destined for the back of the net found the crossbar. Then, West Chester United SC pounced on the loose ball and sent it upfield. The ball slid to the feet of Thomas Robertson in a 2-on-1 situation. Robertson made an exquisite pass to Ronan Sullivan on the rush. All alone against Sloan, who was off his line to try and cut off the angle, Sullivan calmly chipped the ball into the open net. The score was 2-0 and the game was effectively over with 16 minutes to play.
The game was far from a rout as Real Central NJ consistently produced chances despite being a player down. The home side kept pressure on West Chester United SC and did a good job of not allowing the visitors to just kill off the game. But none of those chances made it over the goal line and West Chester United SC were able to leave West Windsor, NJ with the win and a clean sheet.
As mentioned earlier, Malachi Neal had an excellent game in central defense for Real Central NJ. A standout play occurred in the 68th minute when Neal made a great play to intercept a pass and charged upfield. He passed the ball and received it again to continue his run in space. The play ended with a Real Central NJ chance and corner kick. Even though the result of the play was only a corner, it was the kind of individual effort that could’ve led to an equalizing goal.
Real Central NJ will finish their USL2 season on the road on Saturday, July 11th, against Philadelphia Lone Star FC. Kickoff is set for 2pm at Bartram High School.
