Pompliano's early strike not enough as Real Central falls to LVU

June 24th, 2026

WEST WINDSOR, NJ – Real Central NJ lost a compelling USL2 game 2-1 to LVU Rush on Wednesday evening. Despite leading the match for over 50 minutes, LVU Rush’s two second-half goals spelled defeat for the home side.

Real Central NJ got on the board first in the 11th minute when Player of the Match Max Schrader sent a wonderful ball into the path of a streaking Luke Pompliano. Barreling into the right side of the 18-yard box, Pompliano fired a strike on the deck past LVU Rush goalkeeper Lou Liedtka, and Real Central NJ were ahead 1-0.

The hosts had the better of possession for most of the first 35 minutes. Pompliano was a standout for Real Central NJ by making strong runs with the ball to put pressure on the LVU Rush defense.

LVU Rush started to turn the screws towards the end of the first half. The visitors were able to provide pressure in the final third but were unable to create any real appetizing chances. The Real Central NJ defense managed to stay strong and avoid danger going into the break.

The second-place LVU Rush broke through early in the second half with a goal in the 51st minute. Shane Velez was able to track down a long ball by Nicholas Bustos at the edge of the 18-yard box. Velez stepped right to create space from the defender, shot, and scored to even the contest at 1-1.

A goalkeeping change by LVU Rush at halftime turned out to be a major factor in the game. Matthew Link came on and made a dazzling save in the 69th minute. Real Central NJ’s Matthew Lynch was in the catbird seat from about ten yards out with the ball at his feet. He fired a rocket that seemed destined to put his team back on top, but Link made a sprawling save to keep the score level.

The save had profound implications when LVU Rush got the difference-making goal in the 70th minute by Saleem Diakite. The play once again started with a long ball. Diakite received the pass, made a deft touch to get around Real Central netminder Tyler Sloan, and fired into the yawning net to make the score 2-1.

Real Central NJ had a strong chance to equalize in the 86th minute but once again Link was up the challenge. Anthony Durling sent a tantalizing ball into the box, but Link reacted quickly and sprung from his line to jump on the loose ball. Real Central NJ would get no better opportunities for the rest of the match.

The long balls giveth and taketh away for Real Central NJ in this one. The home club scored from the benefit of a long pass but were beaten by two similarly lengthy balls that were the difference in the game.

Max Schrader was a bright spot for Real Central NJ. Schrader was quick to step into passing lanes and provided strong defense all night. It was an impressive effort by the defender.

The loss ended Real Central NJ’s playoff hopes for the 2026 USL2 season. With a 4-4-2 record, they are now 13 points behind LVU Rush, who are in second-place in the Mid-Atlantic Division, with four games to play.

Real Central NJ will next play on the road on Saturday, 6/27, against the Delaware Ospreys. Their next home game will be against the same club next Wednesday, 7/1, on the campus of Mercer County Community College, with kickoff set for 6 pm.
