WEST WINDSOR, NJ – Real Central NJ improved their record to 2-0 after a gritty 1-0 victory against Reading United AC on Wednesday night. The second straight home win puts Real Central NJ in second place in the Mid-Atlantic Division very early in the 2026 USL2 season.
Both teams came out looking to build out play from the back and get on the front foot. The pressure from the two teams led to a tight first 20 minutes with possession slightly favoring Reading United AC.
In the 22nd minute, Kaelan Debbage made a fantastic long pass to team captain Luke Pompliano on the rush. After receiving the pass, Pompliano was fouled in the box.
Pompliano executed the penalty shot with a strong shot on the deck to the left. Goalkeeper Mathias Christensen dove the wrong way and Real Central NJ were up 1-0 in the 24th minute.
Reading United AC responded by establishing a clear edge in possession for the rest of the half. The visitors, who were looking to bounce back after dropping their USL2 opener against LVU Rush 3-1, effectively clogged the middle of the park to make it difficult for Real Central NJ in possession.
With the ball at their feet, Reading United AC were determined to send long balls over the top to striker Michiharu Takanashi. The strategy yielded results with Takanashi’s speed and clever passing creating opportunities.
But Real Central NJ’s back line was up for the challenge. Central defenders Chris Kitch and Max Schrader gamefully blocked shots and closed airspace on Reading United AC attackers. While Reading had 6 chances in the first half, none got through because of the effective team defending by Real Central NJ.
The second half saw Reading United AC dominate possession in the first 15 minutes. A raft of chances followed but again, Real Central NJ’s defense was game.
Max Schrader was a presence all night and blocked a bevy of shots from close areas. For much of the game, Schrader was given the tough task of marking Takanashi in the box. Supported by his teammates, Schrader’s efforts were successful.
Left back Kaedan Debbage was also a standout performer. Debbage helped establish possession with strong drives forward down the wing. He also sent good balls ahead like the one that led to the penalty shot which decided the game.
Reading United AC kept the pressure up for the rest of the match but couldn’t break through on goalkeeper Tyler Sloan. The keeper did a fine job of anticipating passes and shots. Sloan was in command of his area and in the right position all night. He well-earned the team’s clean sheet.
Midfielder Chris Hines was Man of the Match for Real Central NJ. Hines gave a strong performance in the holding midfielder role. Even though Reading United AC made it difficult, Hines was able to pilot his club up field and out of danger when necessary. His gritty performance helped the team earn 3 tough points.
Real Central NJ will head out on the road for the next two USL2 games. They face division-leading LVU Rush on 5/30/26 and Ocean City Nor’easters on 6/3/26.
