Philadelphia, PA- Real Central NJ's women's team secured a 2-1 away win against WPSL newcomer Kensington SC. Playing at Holy Family University's Tiger Field, both sides were excited to get the season underway. The Ponies starting line-up featured many veterans, including Allison Gilbert (captain), Jade Vieira (captain), Miley Jones, Phoebe Merrigan, and Bella Miller.
Real tallied first, with Merrigan sending a beautiful cross from the right side to the far post, connecting with Miley Jones, who calmly found the back of the net. Both teams turned up the tempo for the remaining 37 minutes of the half. Early in the second half, Kensington's striker Elena Hincapie took advantage of a long ball over Real's back-line and poked in the equalizer.
Real put forth a strong effort to create scoring chances. In the 81st minute, Taylor Krott (TCNJ), received a through ball from Teegan Fairfax, took a touch, and drove a low shot to the right corner, finding the back of the net. The Ponies settled in for the remaining 15 minutes to lock in the victory.
"A road trip win in our conference is always difficult, and Kensington put up a strong, competitive line-up. The team played with energy and did a great job of controlling possession" said head coach Brian Thomsen. "Great start to the season and a game we can build from as we prepare for the Ukies".
"Kensington hosted a high quality WPSL game, with a beautiful playing facility and deep roster" noted Ben Chrnelich, Real's sporting director. "It's great to see our conference continue to expand with like-minded organizations who are focused on player development while achieving the WPSL's game day standard."
Real Central's next match is the home opener - June 3, 7pm at Mercer College, hosting the Philadelphia Ukrainians.
