RCNJ Men Grab Inaugural Win in Delaware River Derby

By Jack Schloesser

(Central Jersey) -The Real Central NJ Soccer (RCNJ) men’s team earned its first three points with a 3-2 home win against Philadelphia Lone Star FC on Tuesday, May 25th. After earning their first point against West Chester United, the side kept up the good form behind a Player of the Match performance by winger Christian Coridon.

“It was one of the most fun games I’ve played in a long time, and this is a good win for us that will help us out a lot in the future.” Christian Coridon said after the match. The starting winger even gave a little shout-out to our amazing fans. “The fans helped us out a lot. They kept us pushing when we are losing ourselves.”

Philadelphia Lone Star FC came into the game after a 2-0 win against Lehigh Valley United to gain their first three points in USL League Two.

“It was a hard fought game and I knew it was going to be a battle. But, we were able to come out on top.” said men’s head coach Patrick Snyder. “We started to find our rhythm when we brought on some fresh legs and we were able to start pressing more aggressively.”

Philadelphia had a number of chances, but the RCNJ backline held their ground and were able to halt the most promising attacks. Besides their two goals, the best of the Lone Star chances came midway through the first half, but center-back Harrison Taylor was able to stymie it at the edge of the box.

The scoring opened up early with a quick combination play down the left side between Phede Erickson and Wesley Leggettwhose cross to Player of the Match Christian Coridon was slotted past the keeper into the bottom right corner. Lone Star equalized just three minutes later and took the lead in the 38th minute.

At the start of the second period, RCNJ scored their second goal from a great solo run by central midfielder Ethan Shaw after pressing for the ball near the midfield stripe. Shaw beat three defenders and rifled a slow shot from the top of the 18 that was deflected over the keeper and dropped into the back of the net.

With the score tied at two-all, Real Central NJ started to bring the pressure with numerous attacks down the wings. During the dying minutes, substitute Justin Brunow and striker Wesley Leggett combined for several passes to break down the defense which led to a breakaway Leggett. The striker was then fouled just inside the penalty area. Legget stepped up for the penalty and calmly struck the ball into the back of the net for the go ahead goal.

Real Central NJ is at home for another three straight matches, two for the men on Friday, May 28th, and Wednesday, June 2nd, both at 7 pm. The women will end the club’s five-match homestand on Friday, June 4th at 7 pm.
